Ramstein Air Base Airshow 1979
During the 1970s and 1980, Ramstein Air Base almost every year hosted an airshow. The year 1979 was no exception to that. Begin the headquarters of the United States Air Force in Europe, the show every year attracted many American and NATO aircraft.
Static show
Recce Reports gained already access the day prior to the event, on Saturday 4 August 1979. It was a sunny day and without the mass of spectators, the more than 50 aircraft on the static could be photographed very nicely. Highlights on the ground were a Vulcan B2 bomber from the Royal Air Force, a G-222TCM cargo aircraft from the Italian Air Force and two Starfighter jets from Norway.
Airshow
On Sunday the 5th, the airbase opened its doors to the public. The many spectators could enjoy American hamburgers and watch nice performances by the Grasshopper Alouette III choppers of the Royal Netherlands Air Force and the G-91s from Italian demo team Frecce Tricolori. Also showing their skills were five CF-104 Starfighter from the Canadian Air Force, that also had airbase in Germany in that time frame. Last but not least, the Austrian Air Force was present with their Karo AS aerobatic team, flying the Saab 105Öe.
