493rd Fighter Squadron – Flying scythes over Europe


Recce Reports visited the 48th Fighter Wing at RAF Lakenheath, U.K., on 26 June 2014 in preparation of an article about a day in the life of a F-15C Driver in the 493rd Fighter Squadron, nicknamed Grim Reapers. United States Air Force defense specialists are working on cutbacks in defense costs. One of the possible victims of these cutbacks could be the 493rd FS. In March 2014, the USAF made it clear that there are plans to retire 51 F-15Cs, including 21 Eagles flying overseas. However, the recent flare-up of tensions in Eastern Europe may delay the withdrawal of the F-15C from the 493rd, the only F-15C squadron in Europe.

Until more is clear, the pilots of the 493rd train daily to contribute to the mission and vision of its next higher echelon the 48th Fighter Wing, that commands the 493rd: provide worldwide responsive combat airpower and be capable of dominating any adversary.
