A paradise for aviation enthusiasts
For European aviation enthusiasts the South West of the United States is a true paradise. With almost all year round superb weather conditions and great photo opportunities at large airbases from the Air Force, Marines and Navy, lots of enhusiasts cross the ocean to fill up their digital photo cards. Even in the weekends the forces head out for practice flights and don’t be surprised if military pilots stop at a civil airfield to refuel their aircraft and to enjoy a quick lunch.
From our U.S. trip in 2013 we like to share some nice shots taken at several locations throughout the South West region. This report includes shots from Naval Weapons Air Station China Lake, California, where we visited test squadron VX-9 ‘Vampires’ for an article in Combat Aircraft magazine, chopper practice field Imperial Beach near San Diego and Phoenix Mesa Gateway Airport, a civil airfield frequently visited by thirsty military aircraft. If you ever get the chance, check these fantastic places out and enjoy a display from the U.S. military forces.
